New Collection at the Museum

On November 1,2025, the Museum of the History of the American Order of Knights Templar unveiled its fifth collection, featuring Personal Belongings and Souvenirs associated with members of the Order in the United States. The centerpiece of this new collection is an elegant set of silver tableware — three bowls and three plates — presented to Boston Commandery No. 2 by Sir Knight James H. Upham on February 16,1870. Sir James Humphreys Upham (1820—1904) was a distinguished politician and public figure in Massachusetts. In 1859, he was created and dubbed a Knight Templar, Knight of Malta, and Knight of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem in Boston Commandery No. 2. He later held several officer positions and, at the Annual Conclave in October 1877, was elected Eminent Commander, being re-elected in 1878. On October 31,1879, he was elected Grand Treasurer of the Grand Commandery of Massachusetts and Rhode Island. This exceptional silver set not only reflects the distinguished status of its donor but also embodies the enduring connection between fraternity, charity, and the rich traditions of American Freemasonry in the 19th century.
